Making Reality Capture easier to use

From site to screen

In 2025, NavVis technology was used to capture more than one billion square meters of the built world. That’s equivalent to tens of thousands of buildings, factories, campuses, and city blocks.

We look forward to seeing where that figure stands by the end of 2026. However, one development is already clear: reality capture is becoming part of routine project work.

Surveying providers are covering more sites. Construction teams need current information about work in progress. Building operators need reliable records of spaces that continue to change.

Supporting this work requires capture technology that teams can use frequently. It also requires reality data that the wider project team can access, understand, and put to work.

Two recent NavVis releases support that connected workflow. NavVis CLX makes everyday documentation easier to scale. The Fall ’26 Product Update in IVION 12.0 makes captured sites easier to explore, manage, and use.

A practical option for everyday documentation

Many routine documentation jobs still rely on drawings, photographs, manual measurements, or a combination of all three. Reality capture provides a more complete record of existing conditions. However, assigning specialist equipment and operators to every floor, building, or follow-up visit is not always practical.

NavVis CLX was developed for this work. Launched in September 2026, it is an agile, compact capture device purpose-built for high-volume, everyday documentation.

It complements NavVis MLX and NavVis VLX within the NavVis LX-Series. Each device supports a different range of project requirements.

Typical NavVis CLX applications include site assessments, area referencing, quantity surveying support, and LOD200 Scan-to-CAD and Scan-to-BIM workflows. NavVis MLX and NavVis VLX remain better suited to projects with more demanding detail and accuracy requirements, including LOD300+ applications.

NavVis CLX is compact, lightweight, and straightforward to learn. Teams can move easily between jobs and capture occupied, confined, or hard-to-reach spaces. Operators who understand dynamic capture principles can begin working with the device within minutes. This reduces the specialist training required for routine documentation.

Check the site before leaving

Fast capture only delivers value when teams return with the coverage they need. Missed areas can require another visit, additional coordination, and delays to downstream work.

NavVis CLX combines a dual LiDAR architecture with live 2D and 3D coverage feedback on its integrated display. Operators can see which areas they have captured as they move through the site. They can identify and address potential gaps before completing the job.

Once processed, the capture produces clean, low-noise point cloud data for documentation, measurement, and downstream modeling.

This gives teams handling high volumes of similar projects a consistent capture workflow. NavVis MLX and NavVis VLX remain available for work with more demanding detail and accuracy requirements.

Keep the data moving

The workflow continues after the site visit. Teams need to process, check, share, and turn the captured data into useful project information.

NavVis CLX works with IVION Processing and IVION to provide a connected route through these steps. IVION Processing turns captures into registered point clouds. IVION provides a managed reality data layer where teams can explore, measure, plan, and verify existing conditions.

Teams can also download point clouds in standard formats, create orthophotos, and use the data in established CAD and BIM workflows, including Autodesk Revit.

The captured record can continue supporting the project after the immediate deliverable is complete. Colleagues can revisit the site virtually, check measurements, and review existing conditions without arranging another visit.

When the physical site changes, new captures can help teams keep the record aligned with the latest captured state.

A clearer way to explore captured sites

Point clouds remain essential for precise measurement and technical work. Many stakeholders, however, do not work with point clouds every day.

Project owners, facility managers, production planners, and clients often need a representation they can recognize immediately.

The Fall ’26 Product Update, now available in IVION 12.0, introduces Gaussian splats alongside point clouds and panoramas. Splats provide a realistic 3D representation of a captured site. Users can move continuously through the space and examine it from different angles. Recognizable colors, surfaces, and depth provide immediate visual context.

This supports remote reviews and customer presentations. Reality capture teams can give stakeholders an accessible view of the site while retaining the underlying spatial data for technical work.

From the Splats view, users can navigate, take measurements, add points of interest, and share a direct link to the same perspective. Splats are currently available through a beta program for NavVis MLX customers.

IVION 12.0 also brings browsing, navigation, Mark & Measure, Crop & Download, Model Management, and points of interest into one working environment. Users can move between these tasks without repeatedly changing modes or waiting for the scene to reload. The updated interface also makes the available capabilities easier to find.
